Trinity Mid Whitgiftian Hockey(Mids) 1st XI played in the final of the Surrey Plate at the Old Cranleighan’s ground at Thames Ditton on Sunday 15th April 2018. The team won its first piece of silverware for a number of years, capping off a very successful season in the SHL Surrey Area Division 1.
Just to get to the final required two full days of matches at both Royal Russel School and Woking Hockey club.
The semi-final against Wanderers 2s (who finished top of the first team’s league) was a masterclass in clinical finishing and keeping posession. A 4-2 victory was fully deserved and paved the way for the Surrey Plate final against Surrey Spartans who had done well to beat the side top of the league above in their SF.
Mids couldn’t have got off to a better start. Within the first minute the ball had been played round the back then moved forward with ease through the Spartans midfield and in on goal with Oscar Howell providing the finish. Within two minutes however Spartans had drawn level.
Within a matter of minutes further excellent ball movement saw John Devaney score twice At 3-1 Mids did not take their foot of the gas and really put Spartans under enormous pressure. Just before the half time,a short corner saw the ball slip left to Oscar Howell who flicked the ball pass the onrushing keeper to make the score 4-1 to the Mids at the break.
After the break Oscar Howell was found in space at the top of the D to put an excellent finish into the bottom corner, to make it 5-1 with only a minute played of the second half.
Spartans responded with 2 goals one of which was a penalty flick.
The final whistle went to mark a famous victory for a jubilant Mids side who were well worth their 5-3 victory. The whole team put in an excellent shift, especially in the first half.
